Excerpt from article: "A grinding monopoly is about to be extended over us for fifty years to come-- ... an enemy who sets a degrading example to our growing-up generation; an enemy who believes it right to do wrong; an enemy who believes that knavery, villainy and bribery are honorable and should take a front rank in society; What is going on in Washington? Why, it is attempted to bribe Congress into the passage of the so-called Pacific Railroad Funding Bill--ten to twenty thousand dollars for a vote! ... If ever passed through the House, it is almost sure to pass a corporation Senate, and the only hope then remains in President Cleveland's veto power." Adolph Sutro (1830-1898) was an engineer, businessman, and politician. Sutro is perhaps best-known for being the 24th Mayor of San Francisco. He also developed Sutro Heights, Sutro Baths, and a remodeled version of Cliff House. As a politician, he was known for his populist platform.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
