Publisher's 3/4 leather binding with gilt lettering on spine. Rubbing. 312 pages, Vol. 2126 in the publisher's "Collection of British Authors" series. Bookplate on endpaper, and inscription on fly leaf, "Fred W. Carpenter Naples Italy May 30 1902". This is a collection of essays about contemporary Italy by John Addington Symonds (1840-1893), English poet and cultural historian. It was owned by Fred W. Carpenter, who was William Howard Taft's (1857-1930) personal secretary from 1900-1910, during Taft's tenure as Governor-General of the Philippines (1901-1904), Secretary of War (1904-1909) and his first year as President. In 1910, he resigned to take up a post as Minister of Morocco, purportedly for his health, but it may have been because he could not effectively handle the duties of personal secretary to the President. In 1902, Taft visited Rome to negotiate with Pope Leo XIII for the purchase of Philippine lands owned by the Roman Catholic Church. It is safe to assume that Mr. Carpenter accompanied him, and inscribed this book as a remembrance.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
