TURNER, Richard (Association Copy Nico SMITH) : The Eye of the Needle. An Essay on Participatory Democracy

Spro-Cas, 1972

Very good in the original pictorial thin card wrappers as issued, label foot spine, light wear to extremities. Nico Smith's copy, with numerous annotations and underlinings throughout the text, and two papges of handwritten notes in his hand on the rear endpapers. Nico Smith (1929 – 19 June 2010) was a South African Afrikaner minister and prominent opponent of apartheid. Smith was a professor of theology at the University of Stellenbosch, a member of the Afrikaner Broederbond (Afrikaner Brotherhood) organization, and a minister of the apartheid-supporting Dutch Reformed Church (DRC). However, he abandoned his upper-class lifestyle to live with the impoverished and segregated blacks of Mamelodi, a suburb of Pretoria. From Mamelodi, he worked to support the black community and oppose apartheid. Smith joined the Dutch Reformed Church in Africa (DRCA), the separate branch of the Dutch Reformed Church for non- whites, due to the DRC's refusal to oppose apartheid. As such an important association with Turner. Richard Turner (1942, Stellenbosch – 8 January 1978, Durban), known as Rick Turner, was a South African philosopher who was very probably assassinated by the apartheid state in 1978. Nelson Mandela described Turner "as a source of inspiration".
