Owner's neat,ink, handwritten name and contempraneous date ( Frank H. Jones December,1889) to top edge of title page.Publisher's original, bright, crisp and reasonably clean, illustrated red cloth boards with black ink blocked illustration and bright,crisp, blocked gilt lettering to both front board and spine/backstrip respectively; rear board with blocked,black ink publisher colophon to its centre,and brown+white repeated foliate design illustrated endpapers; with negligible shelf-wear, bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks,tears or splits present - other than an approx. 2cm frayed split on rear-facing gutter's fold/crease's edge of spine,at the head of same.Corner tips with gentle,tiny curl,a lightly darkened spine/ backstrip but still with bright,crisp, blocked gilt lettering and blocked illustration,none of the gilt oxidised or missing.Miniscule bumping,creasing to both head+foot of spine with reciprocal nicks and reciprocal colour loss - nothing excessive.Top edges inevitably but lightly aged/toned with minimal blemish,fore-edges similar; contents bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK,8vo HB,1st edn,xii-xvipp+2-525pp,plus 2-32pp publisher's catalogue (dated October 1889) at the rear,220 b/w illustrations by Daniel Carter Beard,interspersed throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] a blank,half-title with publisher's advert to verso,b/w illustrated frntis with aged tissue guard in situ,title page,a Preface, a contents list/table and a separate illustrations list/table,and to the rear,as last page before publisher's catalogue b/w vignette illustration repeated from title page. Daniel Carter Beard was Twain's favourite and most chosen illustrator for the author's works.As a prolific illustrator for several US periodicals/magazine's, Twain discovered Beard's illustrations in 'Cosmopolitan' - after being impressed with his artwork in 'Wu Chih Tien,The Celestial Empress'.Collaborating on 'A Connecticut Yankee at the Court of King Arthur' (US title),they began a working relationship that would see them work on 'The American Claimant','The 1,000,000 Banknote','The Eskimau Maiden's Romance', 'Traveling with a Reformer','Tom Sawyer Abroad' and 'Following the Equator',and in that collaboration turning into a lasting friendship.
