A volume in the Library of Southern Civilization Twitchell was injured at the battle of the Wilderness, but later returned to duty as a captain of a company of black soldiers at the siege of Petersburg. After the war, in the fall of 1865, Twitchell was named the head of the Freedman's Bureau in Louisiana's Bienville Parish.
