UK.THE WESTERN MORNING NEWS CO.,LTD.,[n.d. - c1947/8]

ISBN No ISBN.

UK,Qrto wraps, and original glassine dw/dj, 1st edn.[Not dated, but circa 1947/8, published at 10/6d.] NFINE/VG.The plain glassine dw/dj has some inevitable shelf- wear with some negligible creasing to all it's edges, chipping with minimal loss to all corners and head of spine/backstrip, two small closed tears to rear, top edge. Majority of dw/dj loss is to foot of lower edge of rear wrap's gutter edge of spine/ backstrip - in a vertical, rectangular shape (approx 3.1/2" tall x 1.1/2" wide) and some small horizontal triangular loss to same lower edge's lower corner.A scarce but excellent surviving original example, particularly given the dw/djs' fragility and age.A rare occurrence to still be with the book after so long,as it's so plain, drab and nondescript - almost like aged greaseproof paper! Bright, clean wrap- around red+black Blitz scenic photographic illustrated card/paper covers and red lettering.Foot of spine/backstrip has an approx 1" split to front gutter edge - but still in situ and no loss - approx 1/2" split with chipping+rubbing with miniscule loss to top of front gutter edge too. Described hard, but fairly and honestly - probably too graphically!! Reads worse than it actually looks or is! UK,Qrto wraps,4-62pp [paginated] includes scenic b/w photographic frntis (aerial shot of The Hoe seafront,1938),profuse contemporary b/w photographs (taken by Western Morning News staff) with accompanying text by H.P. Twyford, plus [unpaginated] title page with foreword by Harold Harmsworth,Chairman,The Western Morning News Co.,Ltd.Pasted internally,to rear wrap,an immaculate,tear-free,fold-out b/w City map of where the bombs fell. These maps are usually removed or missing. The book was produced by The Western Morning News Co.,Ltd.,at cost price. The sale and copyright have been passed by the company over to St. Andrew's Church for the benefit of the Restoration Fund. Staff photographers for the newspaper provided most of the photographs used, and the text was compiled by H.P. Twyford.A record of the WW2 Blitz bombing raids on Plymouth,England. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too! So,please contact seller, because of the lighter weight and the value of this item, for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!
