First printing. Thick 8vo. xxxv, 912 pp. Original marbled boards beautifully rebacked in modern 1/2 calf with gilt stamped black leather spinal label. Although the title page calls for an atlas "of nearly three hundred engravings," this was not published. Alfred-Armand-Louis-Marie Velpeau (1795-1867) was a blacksmiths son, a pupil of famous Tours physician Bretonneau (1778-1862), and was professor of clinical surgery at the Paris Faculty (1834-1867). His principal works are his Treatise on Surgical Anatomy (1823); this Operative Surgery treatise (1832 edition with the atlas; important for its historic data), and his great treatise on Diseases of the Breast (1854).
