VERNE, JULES: : THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN HATTERAS containing 'THE ENGLISH AT THE NORTH POLE' and 'THE ICE DESERT'

LONDON.WARD,LOCK & CO.,LIMITED. [n.d. - circa 1900.]

ISBN No ISBN.

UK,12mo HB,1st edn.[Not dated, circa 1900. Although also issued in blue, identical pictorial cloth - this is the green cloth variant.] VG.No owner inscrptn per se,but a School Prize bookplate dated for year ending Mid-Summer,1901 pasted to front pastedown of coated dark blue eps which have an approx 2" split/tear and cracking at lower edge.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, publisher's original green cloth with 3-colour (black, white and red) blocked illustration - man wrestling a polar bear - to the front board/cover and with bright, crisp gilt blocked title and black ink blocked author to lead, lower corner, white+black ship's mast with furled sails detail illustration and very lightly dulled blocked gilt title+publisher and similarly lightly dulled red letters for author,to the spine/backstrip,rear board/ cover plain and undecorated. With negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing - two tiny snicks to folds/creases at head of spine/backstrip, no other nicks tears, splits or fraying present. All edges gilt (a.e.g); contents generally bright, tight and clean - with exception of a production/binding fault(?) To opposing pages 74/5 it would appear that a sheet of gold-leaf (approx 3.5" wide x 4.5" tall) has accidentally been left in between then and has since decomposed leaving its tan-coloured 'ghost' shadow to each the pages, and a semi-circular hole, with also,a couple of other tiny holes to one, near that pages' gutters,as also between pp70/1,there is a small portion of free-floating gold-leaf, also left behind and further small portions and flecks within the last two pages also.Assumed from the process of gilding the page edges? No dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation. Strangely too, although illustrations are credited as by Henry Ausin, there are none present and there doesn't appear to be any evidence of their presence at all - there is not even a list/table of them in the pagination! UK,12mo HB,1st edn,vi-viipp+10 -223pp [paginated] includes contents list/ table, the two stories: 'The English at the North Pole' and 'The Ice Desert' comprising XXXII (32) and XXVII (27) chapters respectively, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages each with a blank reverse, verso of contents page and recto of last page of same also blank, and individual separate book's title separator pages, both also with blank rectos. An interesting variant variant possibly? A very uncommonly presentable item, this example has survived exceptionally well, particularly and unusually, without the usual major discolouration and other imperfections usually encountered or expected in a book of this age.
