Profusely illustrated in color and black and white. 128 pp. Large 4to., illustrated paper wrappers. This, the first issue of the American edition of this French publication, has a cover specially designed by Matisse and a series of original color lithographs illustrating the four elements by Fernand Leger, Joan Miro, Rattner and Bores. There are heliogravure illustrations of photographs by Man Ray, Brassai, Louis Guichard, and others. Also, among much else, a double-spread photograph of Picasso's "Guernica" taken by Dora Maar, which had only recently been exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris Exhibition of 1937, an article by Andre Gide, "A few Reflections on the Disappearance of the Subject in Painting and Sculpture," and previously unpublished letters and drawings from Cezanne to Emile Zola. All texts are in English, translated (mostly) by Robert Sage. A very bright, clean copy with the subscription order form housed in the bright, paper-covered box, with the illustration by Matisse reproduced on the lid.
