[Wallis (J.P.R.) Editor] : ZAMBESI JOURNAL OF JAMES STEWART

276 pages, 8vo (260 x 180 mm), frontispiece portrait, folding map, red buckram gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut, d.w.. Central African Archives, Oppenheimer Series no. 6

'James Stewart's Journal covers the disastrous close both of his own expedition and of the two other launched so hopefully under the impulse of Livingstone's success. Stewart, out of admiration for that stirring achievement, quickened the Free Church of Scotland to countenance, and in some measure support, an Industrial Mission to Central Africa, and he himself sold much of his inheritance and volunteered to go. It was heroic but reckless, and the narrative of his frustrations, misunderstandings and hardships is moving. Historically, it gains significance from its story of the slave trade with its horrible implications.' Editor's note.
