Diana Barnato Walker is the daughter of the millionaire racing driver,Woolf Barnato,and granddaughter of Barney Barnato who co-founded the De Beers diamond mining company and the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company in South Africa.This book tells the story of her life - and what an exotic life it has been!
Diana and her sister Virginia were raised in a world of affluence and charm.But,by the time she was a debutante in 1936,Diana had had enough of her chaperoned existence and,seeking excitement,she turned to
flying,soloing at Brooklands after only six hours' training.
Diana joined the ATA (Air Transport
Auxiliary) in 1941,to help ferry aircraft to RAF and FAA (Fleet Air Arm) squadrons and bases all over the country.During the next few years she flew scores of different aircraft - fighters,bombers,and training planes - in all kinds of weather without radio,so it was up to the ATA pilot to find the way with no help from the ground.
She lost many friends,a fiance and then her husband before the end of 1945,but continued to fly,and after the war was appointed Corps Pilot to
the Women's Junior Air Corps (now the Girls Venture Corps).In 1962 she
was awarded the Jean Lennox Bird Trophy for notable achievement in aviation - but her greatest moment came in 1963 when she flew an aeroplane through the sound barrier,
becoming for a time "the fastest woman in the world".She was awarded the MBE in 1965.
Now in her seventies (then 1994),
Diana has finally been persuaded to publish her remarkable memoirs.
Brimming with adventure,anecdotes and famous names,many of whom were or are personal friends,the book is compelling reading.Here is a story of a vry special woman who continues
to live life to the full.
