First Edition (first printing), complete in two volumes. 8vo. 260pp and 246pp. In a handsome Harrison & Sons binding of half suede with cloth covered sides, with five raised bands and black stamped lettering, borders and decoration to the backstrips. With marbled endpapers and gilt top edges. Tiny dealer plate to the base of both front pastedowns. A sliver of offset browning to the free endpaper margins and just a little spotting to three or four preliminary leaves. Boards a little rubbed and chafed in places. A very good copy of the author's only completed full-length work of fiction, written between 1881-84 and set in 161-177 AD in the Rome of the Antonines.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
