A Good copy. Charles Dudley Warner (1829-1900) was an American author. He was a friend of Mark Twain, and they famously co-authored the satirical novel, The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today, which gave the time period it refers to (c. 1870-1900) its well-known moniker. The American Newspaper is a concise book containing a essay by Warner. In his essay, Warner discusses the American press and newspapers. He covers a variety of subjects including the current state of newspapers, the shortcomings of some contemporary newspapers, and improvements that can be made in newspaper editing and reporting in general. A couple opening lines from Warner's lecture: "We have heard a great deal about the power, the opportunity, the duty, the 'mission,' of the press. The time has come for a more philosophical treatment of it, for an inquiry into its relations to our complex civilization, for some ethical account of it as one of the developments of our day, and for some discussion of the effect it is producing, and likely to produce, on the education of the people." Warner closes with the following: "With all its faults, I believe the moral tone of the American newspaper is higher, as a rule, than that of the community in which it is published." Referenced from the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 21148: "3030 copies printed.". Book. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover
