8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a superb, original 1893 - 1894 manuscript diary fully handwritten in a notepad with meticulous, small, perfectly legible script authored by Native American woman Loanda Augustina Lake Warren. The note pad, whose back cover is missing, is inscribed along the top cover Loanda Augustina Warren 1893 and on the bottom Loanda Augustina Lake Warren - Feb 10 1894. [Loanda once lived Kansas, as is evidenced in an 1879 - 1880 diary we list separately [Seller ID #0002062] where we believe among other jobs she served as a Postmistress for a time. Later after her husband's death in 1889 she returned to her home in Upstate New York largely in the towns of Chautauqua, Charlotte's Center and near Fredonia. We believe she was of the Seneca or Iroquois tribe.] Loanda excels as a diarist not only describing life but in providing page after page of local history and genealogy. She is inordinately involved with the fabric of her community each day of the 158 pages intimately detailing and describing her life from the mundane, endless chores and also the joys of life. She shares with her diary the feelings she has towards her neighbors and her lot in life given she not only deals with life as a Native woman but one who was for the most part happily married to a white man until his death in 1889. Here are some snippets: "Jun 3 A pleasant day but a thundershower near 6 o'clock pm. Warmed potatoe, cooked an egg, made butter gravy & a graham spider cake. Read the Old Oaken Chest by S. Cobb…studied puz. in Farm & Home. Called on Mrs. Simmons & Green. Ks went away this PM & I had a good time alone. Made my bed and swept & dusted my bedroom. I have mental pain caused by nervousness and my poor selection of tenants & the unfriendliness of the human animals that judge me. I don't know how to right myself so must trust to the balm of time & my trust in my invisible friends." "I dreamed of seeing and speaking with Ma & A.W. I am so glad. Wish I could meet them in dream land very often. Yes, wish I could know there is a soul life. I think there is, but oh if I could know." "Vesta is making a foolish parade I think and I fear I shall not like her". "Vesta was rather numerous with her wants." The 9 x 6 inch pad has some nibbling to an edge or two and missing the back cover but is complete and overall G+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good
