No owner inscrptn.Bright,crisp, clean,generally sharp-cornered, publisher's original,khaki cloth bds with bright,crisp,stamped gilt silhouette of 'The Golden Hind' (with calligraphic lettering beneath) to top right-hand corner of upper bd; bright,crisp,stamped gilt titleing to foot of upper bd and also to a bright,clean,green cloth blindspine/backstrip.Brown+white with black lettering,illustrated front free endpaper (Plymouth at time of Sir Francis Drake map) with a centrally placed,tiny closed tear to a small crease to it's fore-edge. Rear endpapers cream/off white but bright and clean; rear pastedown vertically slit,creating a wallet, for a folding city-plan map.Front hinge is slightly cracked along its length,some partial cracking to rear hinge - but both still solid and attached though.Top+fore-edges slightly aged/tanned - as usual/ normal; contents bright,tight and clean.UK,Folio (approx 12"+) HB,2nd edn,iii-xvipp+3-147pp [paginated] includes foreword by The Hon. John G. Winant (His Excellency the American Ambassador to the Court of St. James),intro by The Lord Mayor of Plymouth Viscount Astor,author's note,photographic acknowledgements; contents/plates/illus/tables pages, 2pp b/w maps (growth,centralisation, sprawl and decentralisation of population,1800 to 1960 (proposed). Contents include a preamble,12 chapters,profuse mixture of b/w+ colour maps - some of them folding - b/w plans/ diagrams/sketches, contemporary b/w photographs - interspersed throughout the the text and the book - appendices(4 - includes appendices on Agriculture and Soil by Dudley Stamp and G. W. Robinson) and an index. The plans in the book are all based upon Ordnance Survey maps and reproduced with the Controller of H.M. Stationery Office,permision. Certain amendments in the text and and some maps,have been made at the request of the Ministry of Information for security reasons. This additional matter which relates to areas of damage and aerodrome proposals is only available for official use. Some interesting contemporary wartime and later,related ephemera has been laid into this book; a foolscap 'Certificate of Honour' presented to George Street (Devonport) Savings Group acknowledging achievement in 'Save the Soldier' National Savings Campaign,1944,another A4 'Certificate of Honour' again presented to George Street (Devonport) Savings Group acknowledging special achievement in 'Wings for Victoryr' National Savings Campaign,1943. A St. George's Parish Church (Stonehouse) leaflet No.24 (July, 1943) with enclosures: notice of church's Sunday Services & times,and a dated,July,1943 Exeter Diocesan Leaflet,a certificate of Victory celebration dated 8th June,1946 presented to schoolchildren,with George R.I's,facsimile signature to foot of same,an A4 page '21 ARMY GROUP' PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE C-in-C To be read out to all Troops:- dated 5-6-44, with B.L. Montgomery (General) facsimile signatures(2) detailing forthcoming action and exhorting troops with his belief and confidence in them and wishing them 'good luck' and 'good hunting' in Western Europe. Further,a dated (5,July,1954) type-written letter to a name+address'd Stonehouse resident detailing the entitlement of City of Plymouth to a Clearance Order for the demolition of the resident's street,with his residence named and included! The letter continues explaining viewing of order,how+where to objection to it,the Council's legal obligations and further entitlements,concluding with a schedule of other residences to be demolished.Also included, loose,a more modern,Plymouth city map - undated. Since April,2013,the UK Post Office has increased it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering its weight allowances,dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!
