4to; original blue cloth, with boards blocked in blind, and gilt lettering to spine; pp. xx + 314; plates, incl. several in full colour. Light wear to extremities of cloth; boards very slightly bowed; neat ownership inscription to front pastedown; moderate foxing, which is rather more pronounced to edges and outer leaves. Good condition. Seminal work on toxic and medicinal properties of plants, both indigenous and alien, found in southern Africa. John Mitchell Watt (1892-1980) "paid particular attention to indigenous plants with medicinal or poisonous properties and, jointly with M.G. Breyer-Brandwijk, published 'The Medicinal and Poisonous Plants of Southern Africa', Edinburgh, ed. 1 (1932), ed. 2 (1962). After his retirement he lectured for a time at the Plymouth College of Technology, England, and then obtained a post as Demonstrator in the Dept. of Physiology, Univ. of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. He played an active part in scientific societies, was F.R.S. Edinb., F.R.S.S.Afr. and was President of the S. Afr.
