Ex-library. Collection of fifteen original bulletins from the National Defense Committee of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. Bulletins are printed in red and dark blue ink on off-white paper. Various dates in 1941. 8 1/2" x 11." Page count varies, nearly all of the schedules are four pages (one leaf folded in half and printed on all sides); one schedule is eight pages. All pages for each schedule, complete. Each schedule has a stamp from the "California State Library Documents Dept." and "California State Library California Section." Several schedules have the address of the California State Library on typed or printed on back in top margin with the name of the addressee, State Librarian Mabel R. Gillis. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and a few wrinkles. Very Good copies. A collection of fifteen Special Bulletins from the National Defense Committee of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. Each issue is authored by Carl F. Wente, General Chairman of the National Defense Committee. The subtitle of each issue denotes the main topic. Contract Awards are listed by company and dollar amount in each issue with the exception of three. The following is a list of each bulletin number with corresponding date and subtitle. No. 5 (March 6, 1941): "Taxation and Borrowing." No. 6 (March 19, 1941): "18,000,000,000" [about $7 billion being used to produce war materials and food supplies for Britain, which had already entered World War II, and $11 billion used for national interests, infrastructure, and employment]. No. 7 (April 4, 1941): "Thrift--A Vital Part of Defense." No. 8 (April 19, 1941): "Farming Out" [about contractors]. No. 9 (May 5, 1941): "The Job at Hand" [rallying cry for Americans to unite; Wente references the fall of France during WWII]. No. 10 (May 16, 1941): "Mental Preparedness" [war-time defense production and mental preparedness for the war]. No. 11 (May 31, 1941): "Fill the Gap!" [Wente says subcontracting is the weakest part of national defense and says prime contractors cannot do all the work alone]. No. 12 (June 14, 1941): "National Defense and Fire Defense." No. 14 (July 16, 1941): "Taking Stock" [accountability of the contributions the National Defense Committee since its inception]. No. 15 (July 24, 1941): "How Priorities Affect Your Business" [about the wartime priorities system; no contract awards in this issue]. No. 16 (August 13, 1941): "Business and Defense." No. 17 (August 23, 1941): "Sacrifices" [about the sacrifices civilians and industrialists make during war]. No. 18 (September 17, 1941): "Keep 'Em Rolling" [about the continuation of effective freight shipping on railroads; no contract awards in this issue]. No. 19 (October 10, 1941): "Defense News" [about "priorities jam broken," "air lines given rating," and "industrial repair aid"; no contract awards in this issue]. No. 20 (November 14, 1941): "Defense Clinic" [about the upcoming National Defense Production Clinic for prime contractors and subcontractors].. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good.
