Neat,handwritten copperplate inked prize presentation inscrptn+date: Prize John Hy Kingdom for exceptional progress during 1919 ?.J Michell St. Andrew's Boys' to off-set shadowed front free endpaper.A contemporary,local bookseller's narrow paper adhesive label: 'G.FIRKS & SON,BOOKSELLERS,OLD TOWN STREET,PLYMOUTH' pasted towards lower edge of front pastedown.Bright,crisp,clean - one small splash spot to front board, publisher's original tan/khaki cloth boards with a single-lined black edge bordered front board/cover with a 4-colour (orange,black and green and board's background colour) blocked illustration within and black lettering; another different but similarly coloured blocked illustration within a black single-lined bordered,upright rectangle to a very slightly darkened spine/backstrip and also with black lettering,rear board plain and undecorated,and aged white eps with both pastedown's edges foxed and respectively, verso and recto of front+rear free endpapers with off-set shadow foxing. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears,splits or fraying present,hinges solid and sound with no cracking.Top front corner with a crease and subsequent cloth wrinkling to same,lower corner with a smaller bump and crease.Top+fore-edges very lightly aged/ toned - much less than normally encountered or would expect for a book of its age - and with very minimal foxing/ spotting; contents bright,tight,text body fairly clean with occasional foxing/ spotting,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, could appear unread - apart from my own collation.UK,thick 8vo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn,5-288pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,XXX (30) chapters,6 b/w illus - frntis included,by Edward S. Boy's post-WW1 RAF adventure fiction, featuring Derek Daventry training to be a pilot in the RAF. Percy Francis Westerman was a British author and journalist.Specifically,he wrote scores of books for boys and was,in the 1930s,outstandingly the most popular writer in that particular genre.Westerman wrote his first book in 1908,when he was 32.His last came out in May,1959,three months after he died.In all,some 170-odd books,plus a torrent of articles and short stories for other periodicals and magazines etc. Edward S. Hodgson (active 1908-36). Landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy and lived at Bushey, Hertfordshire (Herts.). An illustrator of boys' adventure stories in pen and ink, halftone and full colour.He was the illustrator for Westerman's first and debut novel 'A Lad of Grit.' and several others too.He also contributed to contemporary periodicals and magazines: The Captain,Chums,The Girls' Realm,Herbert Strang's Annual and The Quiver.
