UK,8vo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn,[n.d. but 1919.] FINE-.No owner inscrptn per se,but School Prize presentation bookplate (dated 1919) pasted to front pastedown and causing off-set shadow to verso of beige front free endpaper.Exceptionally bright, crisp,clean and sharp-cornered,publisher's original tan/khaki cloth boards with a single-lined black edge bordered front board/cover with a 4-colour (orange,black and green and board's background colour) blocked illustration within and black lettering; another different but similarly coloured blocked illustration within a black single-lined bordered,upright oblong to a very slightly darkened spine/ backstrip and also black lettering,rear board plain and undecorated,but with a small,bright,crisp,stamped gilt heraldic school badge+motto and aged beige eps,rear fep with off-set shadow to its recto from opposing rear pastedown.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears,splits or fraying present,hinges solid and sound with no cracking.Top rear corrner with a crease and subsequent cloth wrinkling to same,lower rear corner with a smaller bump and crease.Top+fore-edges very lightly aged/toned - much less than normally encountered or would expect for a book of its age - and with very minimal,faint, sporadic foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight,text body fairly clean with very occasional foxing/spotting,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,thick 8vo HB,no dw/dj,1st edn,5-288pp [paginated] includes lightly foxed verso+recto contents list/table,XXX (30) chapters,6 b/w illus - frntis included,by Edward S. Hodgson interspersed throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated]lightly foxed verso+recto half-title with publisher's advert to its recto,b/w illustrated frntis,similarly foxed verso+recto title page and similarly foxed illus list/table with blank recto.The light foxing/spotting continues through top corners of pp9 to pp15,but in decreasing degrees. Boy's post-WW1 RAF adventure fiction, featuring Derek Daventry training to be a pilot in the RAF. Percy Francis Westerman was a British author and journalist.Specifically,he wrote scores of books for boys and was,in the 1930s,outstandingly the most popular writer in that particular genre.Westerman wrote his first book in 1908,when he was 32.His last came out in May,1959,three months after he died.In all,some 170-odd books,plus a torrent of articles and short stories for other periodicals and magazines etc. Edward S. Hodgson (active 1908-36). Landscape painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy and lived at Bushey, Hertfordshire (Herts.). An illustrator of boys' adventure stories in pen and ink, halftone and full colour.He was the illustrator for Westerman's first and debut novel 'A Lad of Grit.' and several others too.He also contributed to contemporary periodicals and magazines: The Captain,Chums,The Girls' Realm,Herbert Strang's Annual and The Quiver.
