H. C. White Co., North Bennington, VT, 1902

Original stereocard with two black-and-white stereoscopic photographs tipped-in on gray board. The photos appear to show a woman being courted by a man on the stairs in a Victorian-era house. There is a white spot at the bottom of each photo, but they may be defects from the original negative. Photos are clean and intact overall but have light to moderate rubbing. Board is clean and intact overall but has faint dampstaining along the edges, light to moderate edge wear, and a few dampstains on back. A Very Good copy. Title and copyright information printed on board below the right photo. "The 'Perfec' Stereograph. (Trade Mark.) Patented April 14, 1903. Other Patents Pending" printed in left margin on front. "H. C. White Co., Publishers. General Office and Works, North Benington, Vt., U. S. A." printed in right margin on front. The H. C. White Company was founded by Hawley C. White, an American photographer, businessman, and optical glass manufacturer, and his two sons, Harrie C. and Clarence W. White. Hawley, Harrie, and Clarence started a business in New York City for making stereoscopes in 1870. In 1874, Hawley moved the family business to North Bennington. Hawley and his two sons began producing stereoviews in 1899. Hawley invented an automated assembly line in which stereoviews could be efficiently produced, with precision, by machine. Hawley photographed many of his company's views during its first few years but hired a staff of photographers thereafter. His sons also traveled the world to take photos for their company. In 1915, Hawley sold his company's stock of negatives to the Keystone View Company. 1915 also marked the year in which Clarence invented a wooden toy tricycle known as the "Kiddie Kar" and when the company changed its business model to manufacturing said product. Drawing from this new product line, H. C. White Co. then expanded its stock to include children's desks, tables, chairs, and other wooden furniture. H. C. White Co. remained in business until the 1930s.. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
