It was Detective Inspector Lindon's case,
but he did very little work on it - he left it to young Detective Sergeant Douglas Gray of the Sydney C.I.B.,and for Doug Gray it was a real puzzle.The body was found in Harvey House in Macquarie Street - Sydney's eqivalent to Harley Street in London - a large building providing consulting rooms for some forty medical specialists.It was discovered by the caretaker on the floor of the lift with a neat puncture in the heart made by a long thin tool.It was the body of Dr. Arthur Lang, well-known and respected as a doctor,and a probable future President of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.The lift could have come from any one of twelve floors,the front door was open to anybody upto eight o'clock in the evening - and Lang had died around eight o'clock.He had been a very good surgeon, but a difficult man to get on with,and a womaniser of no mean accomplishment. The list of possible suspects seemed endless - and the weapon,in a building full of medical instruments,impossible to indentify.This is the first detective story by a new (then 1970) Australian writer with a well founded appreciation of the rules of the classic murder mystery.

For all who enjoy a good detective story Charles Whitman is a name to add to the select list of superbly dependable practioners.A very nice,superb,uncommon title/copy of author's debut novel.
