WHYTE, Frederic : Actors of the Century - A Play-Lover's Gleanings from Theatrical Annals

George Bell & Sons, London, 1898

Very good indeed in the original dark blue cloth, spine dulled.. A fine inscribed presentation and association copy "To Sir Squire Bancroft with the author's kind regards", and with Squire Bancroft's armorial bookplate inside front board.. Sir Squire Bancroft (14 May 1841 – 19 April 1926), born Squire White Butterfield, was an English actor-manager. He and his wife Effie Bancroft are considered to have instigated a new form of drama known as 'drawing-room comedy' or 'cup and saucer drama', owing to the realism of their stage sets.. Bancroft is mentioned several times in the text
