Published to mark the centenary of the Gisborne Harbour Board as constituted in 1884.
Poverty Bay's early settlers chose to build their port at the mouth of the Turanganui River.That port was vital to them - in the absence of feasible road access it provided their sole link with the outside world.The river port they created was destroyed by flood-borne silt in 1916 and the Gisborne Harbour Board then had to create a new harbour,separate
from the river.This tale of two ports tells of the struggles,achievements and disappointments which have been instrumental in the creation of the modern
port of Gisborne.
The first Polynesian migration canoes landed here in this bay.Captn James Cook,
in Endeavour,made his first landfall of NZ
on 8th October,1769 and this is where Maori and Europeans first encountered each
other.It was the first place in the word to see the sunrise,only losing it recently
to Samoa,who moved westward of the International Date Line.
