Wichnyther; Chereau, Jacques : Original Print - "Vue de la Sortie de Paris Prise du Pont Neuf"

Wichnyther; Jacques Chereau, London, England; Paris, France, 1761

A beautiful, original hand-colored copperplate engraving that shows a view of Pont Neuf over the River Seine. People are shown walking or riding in horse-drawn carriages. Statue of Henry IV is featured in the center. Paper measures 19 1/2" x 13 1/8"; printed area measures 5 1/2" x 8 3/4." The local points of interest within the scene have numbers next to them, which correspond to a key below that lists the names of said places or monuments. This print is also a "vue d'optique," which were very popular in the latter half of the eighteenth century and first half of the nineteenth century. Vue d'optique prints emphasized perspective in their compositions and produced an illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope. Also below the image is the title, a short promotional description of Pont Neuf in French, and "Wichnyther ed. Chereau." Jacques Chereau (1688-1776) was a French engraver, printmaker, and publisher of optical prints. Print is very clean and intact with vibrant colors. A tiny hole in the upper-right margin (thumbtack size) and very minimal foxing and age-toning.. Print. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
