She wrote many children's books and spent most of her life advocating for the well-being and education of children during a time when children were thought of as cheap labor. Rachel Crothers (1878-1958) was an American playwright and theater director known for her work that often included feminist themes. Many historians of theater consider Crothers to be the most prolific and successful woman dramatist during the first half of the twentieth century. Mother Carey's Chickens is about a family of four children who are fatherless and live in poverty but find a way to achieve happiness in life despite various hardships and tribulations.
