640 x 815 mm., two sheets joined, in early outline colour, backed on old linen. With some very light browning and loss to engraved surface in the two right corners, right panel missing apparently deliberately so.
A fine large scaled circular map of the environs of London. A feature of the map is its division into squares and circles 5 miles distant from each other. The map extends northwards to Stevenage, east to Rochester, south to Horsham and west to Marlow. With an attractive small panorama of London in the upper left spandrel and an image reflecting Britain’s naval power upper right. The lower spandrels contain advertising images of Willdey’s wares and his imprint 'Sold by G. Willdey at ye Corner House in Ludgate Street near St. Paul’s'. The surrounds are enhanced further by allegorical scenes. The panel on the left contains a gazetteer to the main map of the towns and villages contained, that on the right is lacking although apparently deliberately so. Howgego states that in his opinion the map appears to be derived from that of Charles Price in 1712, with whom Willdey was in partnership at the time. John Senex, Price and Willdey were in partnership from c.1710 but by 1713 poor sales forced the partnership to break up. Willdey began issuing his own collection of double folio maps some of which are dated between 1714 and 1717, hence the date applied to this map. Darlington & Howgego (1964) no. 69 (1).
