Armorial bookplate of John Peachey dated 1782; ex-libris of Westdean Library; signature of John Throgmorton Middlemore., Most of the books in this first edition were consumed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 (the year after publication)—this copy must have survived by being taken to another city. It is said that in order to put together this extraordinary work, Dugdale himself scoured every inch of Warwickshire, to the very last hamlet. “Most of the plates are by Hollar, though on many of them his name does not appear,†notes DNB. “The county is described hundred by hundred, and the topography follows as nearly as possible the course of the streams. The bulk of the volume consists of pedigrees and histories of county families, in conjunction with accounts of the the places where they were settled, and of religious and charitable foundations and their founders, all of them remarkable for general accuracy, and accompanied by constant references to authorities.â€, Upcott 1247-59; Wing D2479; Lowndes III:687; DNB VI:138.
