The first American and first illustrated edition, incorporating the text of the 1904 second [English] edition and including Forestier-Walker's brief preface from that edition stating that "it is an absolutely true story". 8vo. 271pp. Red cloth lettered in black at the spine and with a blind-stamped border to the upper board. With a title page decoration, a frontispiece and nine plates by William Siegel. A small area of slight wear to the base of the upper board, a little spotting to the fore edge, and some light partial toning to the free endpapers. A very good copy in the gold dust wrapper which reproduces one of the Siegel plates, toned at the spine panel, and with a little chafing, nicking and creasing, and a small area of corresponding chafing and loss to the base of the front panel. An anonymously-published story penned by Marguerite Pilon-Fleury, the daughter of a French government official working in Turkey, which supposedly lead to European governesses being forbidden from Turkish harems. There remains some considerable doubt as to the veracity of the story.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Good
