The Borderland Quarterly was a journal that compiled various stories and articles concerning the paranormal, including telepathy, clairvoyance, trances, crystal-gazing, automatic writing, palmistry, astrology, etc. Its editor, William T. Stead, was a major proponent of the spiritualism movement at the end of the 19th century. He traveled widely and gave lectures about various psychic phenomena. He himself claimed the capacity to predict the future, a claim not to be taken lightly: he published two separate pieces, one about the story of a liner sinking in the mid-Atlantic without any lifeboats (1886), and the other about a rescue operation sent to help the survivors of a ship that had struck an iceberg (1892). He also is said to have sketched drawings of himself drowning as well as of ocean liners during his public lectures. Stead was among one of those lost aboard the Titanic in 1912.
