A pine tree on the north bank of the Black River, called the King's Tree by an early explorer, became the focal point of settlement in what is now Williamsburg County, South Carolina. In colonial times, Williamsburg Township was laid out in Prince Frederick's Parish, Craven County, South Carolina, and in 1732 a group of Scotch-Irish settled in the area. The first four chapters of this history of Williamsburg discuss the first settlements under the Lords Proprietors and the foundation of the Township, and give the names of everyone who had settled there by 1737, a description of the Scotch-Irish, and sketches of individuals. Subsequent chapters give an account of economic and agricultural conditions in the area; early churches, with lists of officers, ministers, and members; quotations from early documents; political and social matters; and names of more settlers and officers. A chapter entitled "Colonial Wills" gives the names of all who left wills through 1776, with a listing of their family members. The Revolutionary War is discussed in two chapters, including a sketch of Francis Marion, under whom most Williamsburg men fought, names of Revolutionary soldiers, and biographies of officers. The general history of Williamsburg until 1830 is discussed under the headings of "Government by the People," Presbyterianism Regnant," "Roads and Ferries," "Government and Officials," "Economic and Social Life," and "Indiantown Church." Genealogical material can be found in lists of land claims and owners in 1788, people included in the Census of 1790, taxpayers and amounts paid in 1811, old wills, and lists of church members and government officials. The Nullification Movement of 1832 begins a new era in the history of Williamsburg, and events from 1830 to 1860 are described under the headings "Puritanism, Calvinism, and Arminianism," "Things Political and Social," "Transportations," and "Slavery and Secession." The Civil War occupies five chapters which include muster rolls of units containing Williamsburg men, portraits of officers, events at home, deaths of soldiers from Williamsburg County, and excerpts from soldier's diaries. The return to the Union, Reconstruction, and changes during this time are given two chapters. The post-Civil War history of Williamsburg begins with the incorporation of Kingstree as the county seat in 1866, and includes lists of county officers, a discussion of publica education since 1880 with lists of teachers, religious denominations 1865-1923 with membership lists, and a chapter on banking in Williamsburg with lists of officers. A chapter on the Spanish-American War and World War I, with lists of soldiers, brings this history into the twentieth century and a general discussion of the development of the county up to the original publication of this book in 1923 concludes the volume..
