Susan William lived for years with her husband, Elephant Bill, while he was working among the elephants and acquiring the knowledge of them that made him world famous. She was equally interested, particularly in that unique relationship between man and beast which is that of the oozie (elephant boy) and his elephant. In this book she has told the day by day story of Ba Tu,one of the elephant boys who had worked for her husband. She tells how Ba Tu was born in the primitive native conditions of the elephant camp in the heart of the jungle; of his life as a boy and of the great day, aged 14,he was entrusted with a young elephant of his own to train and look after, for the rest of his working life. She describes in vivid detail and with acute observation how Ba Tu and Po Sein, his elephant, learnt to work together when the elephants' training starts, and eventually come so close in understanding and affection that they can anticipate each other's actions and wishes. This edition is now out-of-print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's. William Kimber himself, worked for Hutchinson for about 17 years before founding "William Kimber & Co" in 1950.It specialized in aviation, war memoirs, autobiographies and motor-racing titles until 1973 when "Haunted Cornwall" took off and the Ghost Stories became another specialty. The company was bought by Thorsons in 1988,and therefore ceased publishing under that name.  William Kimber was purchased by Thorsons in 1988 and therefore ceased publishing under that name.Thorsons was purchased by William Collins in 1989.William Collins became wholly owned by News Corporation in 1990,and was then incorporated into HarperCollins Publishers. The name of William Kimber has not been used for publishing since that, making all previously published titles by them,out-of-print,under that name.
