The story of Elephant Bill told by his wife,Susan Williams.He was called upon by the 14th Army to be OC Elephants during the Battle of Burma.Susan William has many new stories to tell of wild life in the jungle,in which she lived from early years until the Japanese invasion of Burma forced her to leave.
She describes how she was taken to Burma as a girl by an eccentric uncle,and spent most of the next years in the depths of the jungle.At first, with Uncle Pop,a martinet,one of the old school of Empire builders; and then with Elephant Bill whom she met on a campsite on the banks of the Chindwin.Here was a man very different from Uncle Pop.A wonderful man with animals,giving trust and receiving it from his fellow-beings, native and European.This book tells not only of their life together in the jungle,the dangers they shared,the animals they loved and how they brought up their two children in the forests of Burma,but also paints a vivid picture of this remarkable man.
This edition is now out-of-print as the publisher ceased trading in the late 1980's.
William Kimber himself,worked for Hutchinson for about 17 years before founding "William Kimber & Co" in 1950.It specialized in aviation,war memoirs,autobiographies and motor-racing titles until 1973 when "Haunted Cornwall" took off and the Ghost Stories became another specialty. The company was bought by Thorsons in 1988,and therefore ceased publishing under that name.
