Williams, Thomas : Brass Rubbing Taken of the Tombstone of Thomas Williams

England, mid-20th cent.

Long sheet of paper, measuring 146 cm. x 46 cm, stapled (with some clear tape reinforcement) to wooden rods at each end so it may be rolled up. A gold cord is attached to the top rod for hanging. A black wax crayon was used to transfer four discreet images to the paper: 1) a heraldic crest, unidentified, featuring three birds and measuring approximately 15 cm. square; 2) an image of an armored man, hands held in prayer, measuring 62 cm. tall and 16 cm. wide, the top edge of which has been altered with liquid paper or white paint; 3) an inscription, measuring 21 cm. x 40 cm, consisting of two four-line stanzas of rhymed couplets in iambic pentameter which begin with the words in blackletter, "Here lyeth the corps of Thoms Willms esquire..."; 4) an inscription in Latin bearing the date July 1, 1566. Item is in very good condition; paper has no tears but some creasing from having been rolled up.
