Wilson, Ellen Gibson : John Clarkson and the African Adventure

(London: Macmillan, 1980)

8vo; original charcoal cloth; price-clipped laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. viii + (ii) + 236, incl. index; maps; plates. Small impression to upper panel of dustwrapper. Near fine condition. The first complete account of the life of John Clarkson, and of his labours in behalf of American blacks following the War of Independence, including the voyage to West Africa and the establishment of Sierra Leone. This story has since been retold in Simon Schama's Rough Crossings, which was recently dramatised for television by the BBC. "John Clarkson and the African Adventure is the first biography of the remarkable Englishman who, as a young naval lieutenant, in 1791 arranged the historic migration of eleven hundred free American blacks from Canada (where they had taken refuge after the American Revolution with other Loyalists) to the West Coast of Africa. There he became the first and best-loved governor of Sierra Leone. His unique relationship with the adventurous settlers, as the only white man who won their confidence and affection, grew out of his respect for their search for dignity and freedom after the bitter experience of slavery. Together they wrote an extraordinary chapter in race relations. The book provides the most complete description so far of Clarkson's significant and controversial governorship."
