A leaflet ad for the companion volume "Poetical Writings" has been laid down on the front flyleaf. Fitz-Greene Halleck (1790-1867) was an American poet noted for his wit and satires. He was also a member of the 'Knickerbocker Group' in New York. From 1832 to 1849 he served as John Jacob Astor's private secretary and later served as an original trustee for the Astor Library. Well liked during the 19th century, he is most famous for the satire written with Joseph Drake of New York society known as the 'Croakers' in 1819. He is the only American poet in the 'Literary Walk' in Central Park, New York City. Quotations from his letters and poetry are included within the text of this biography. A very good clean copy..
