Original letter handwritten in pencil and black ink by John J. Wilson on lined beige paper. Point Loma and San Diego, California. 8" x 12 3/4." Two pages, complete. Letter and handwriting are very clean and intact overall. There is some tape repair on a few small splits along some of the edges and seams of the fold lines. John J. Wilson (1828-1895) was an Algona, Iowa businessman and politician. Wilson served as Algona's mayor for three terms and was also a Representative of the Iowa state Legislature from 1878-1879 and 1882-1883. At the time of this letter, Wilson was traveling through California looking for business opportunities. In this letter to his wife, Clara M. Wilson (1836-1929), he writes that he has bought fifteen acres of land on Point Loma. He says the land, on which he intends to plant orange and lemon trees, overlooks "the ocean, the bay, and the city." He also writes about going up to Pacific Beach and gathering up clams off the beach for clam stew.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
