General Dare Wilson's memoir is panoramic in its scope.He served throughout the Second World War from the BEF and Dunkirk to Germany,via the Middle East,Italy, France and the Low Countries,before being involved in the unpleasantness of Palestine and the horrors of Korea.That,as this fascinating book reveals,was by
no means the end of the matter either.He saw action aganst the Mau Mau in Kenya and was among the last to leave Aden in 1967. He was one of the few British officers to witness the ill-fated war in Vietnam.
While the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers were his 'home',the author saw active service with the 3rd Recce Regiment and went on to command 22 SAS.During this time he led the regimental team who set a new World Free Fall Altitude record; the thrilling account of this episode is in itself justification for reading this book.
After learning to fly fixed wing aircraft and helicopters,the author became Director of Army Aviation at a critical time. Somehow he found time to pursue a wide range of sporting activities in many parts of the world,be they skiing,Cresta Run,
