WILSON SCOTT NORRIS, ELIZA HUFF : 1895 - 1906 ORIGINAL GROUP OF LETTERS BY AN AGED BALTIMORE SWAIN WHO ROMANCES AND MARRIES HIS TRUE LOVE ONLY TO END UP WITH 3 CHILDREN BY ANOTHER WOMAN HE MARRIES NAMED PINK

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a very sweet, very charming, yet enigmatic group of letters between Wilson Scott Norris ("Kit") of Baltimore, Maryland [b. Aug. 20 1847] and Eliza Huff ("Dollie") of Franklin County, Virginia. Over a period of 1895 through 1906 in about 20 letters, some very, very long, one sees the relationship between Kit and Dolly grow from that of friends, to lovers, to husband and wife: "My dear friend… I could say very sweet things in this letter, but I fear you would think me forward and fresh." "My love, lips, and darling!!!... I love you, you, you, you, you!!! Now let all this thought of heart breaking drop, and only think of how sweet our lips will be when the Master binds us as one in His holy ordinance…I don't care for any other woman but you. I want you awfully much. I must have you, God willing, or my heart will suffer." "My dearest little wife and mate… Is it wondrous that we love? Isn't it nature for two to see in each other beauties which others not within the pair cannot?" Throughout they discuss health, friends, family and of course their own true love! In one particular letter for which I have sent you a photo there is a Baltimore newspaper clipping Kit has attached about a Baltimore woman who is marrying a Pennsylvania fellow and his remarks are delightful. He seems to find great humor and maybe a wee bit of competitiveness, if that is the right construct, regarding the other 'criss-cross' match. The group also includes about a dozen letters [one as late as 1936] from family and friends some to Kit and some to Dolly adding some further breadth to the picture of this loving couple. BIO NOTES: Census records and genealogical sites show Kit married Dolly [whose birth and death dates have been elusive to me] but later Kit married a woman named 'Pink Ware' with whom he had 3 children. Did Dolly die? Did they divorce? Also Kit was about 50-60 years old when he was romancing and marrying Dolly. He must have been of a rather advanced age when he married Miss Ware and had children with her. Overall G+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+
