Four page sheet, 11 3/4 x 7 1/4", with one page letter, dated Feb. 4th, 1830 to his son in New York on board the Brig Suffolk, with news from home. Fritz sailed in his old Ship Eugene for Savannah, Mr. Brown and J Woodbury built a house and had just moved in when Mr. Brown sickened and died, your Mother hopes you will come home from New York, etc. On reverse side Eugene has added a note to Charles that "Anna Marie is one of the most pritee Little creaturs you ever saw. She often speeks of her Uncal Charles. You will see Fritz arrival in paper." Folded and addressed. Age toned, soiled on folds. Winter (1776--1835) was a Gloucester sea captain. He was captured by the British in the War of 1812 and imprisoned for about three years. This William Winter was the grandfather of the drama critic of the same name (1836-1917).. Manuscript.
