Handwritten, ink gift presentation inscrptn and date (Xmas 1939) to top edge of ffe.Bright, crisp,clean,matt,colour pictorial artwork illustrated dw/dj to front panel and spine /backstrip with blue+brown lettering to front,slightly sunned/faded red+black lettering to spine/backstrip.With shelf-wear to lower edges,chipping with minimal losses to foot and both front+back gutter folds of spine/backstrip of dw/dj, lower front corner minimal loss and rear, lower corner also with a larger triangular portion missing; top edges and top corners with small closed tears and chips with minimal loss,a closed tear at head of spine/backstrip with some fractional loss - letters to head+foot of same unaffected by tears.Front top edge portion of letter 'W' with minimal loss,closed tear to part of letter 'N' too.Reads worse than it sounds or actually is - would say about 95% of dw/dj is present.Item is scarce particularly with its original dw/dj. Bright,crisp,clean - virtually spotless and unblemished,no commensurate areas of missing dw/dj portions to both covers+ spine are sunned/faded or grubbed,sharp-cornered - with the exception of front, lower corner - which is minimally bumped with reciprocal creasing,publisher's original plain undecorated cloth boards/covers with black ink printed lettering to spine/backstrip,with recto+ verso respectively,of front and rear feps with off-set shadowing from dw/dj's inner flaps,pastedowns near immaculate and without foxing/spotting,both hinges solid and sound - no cracking.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears,splits present.Top+fore- edges very lightly toned,much less than usually encountered for book of its age, and all without any foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread,apart from my own collation.UK,thick 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn(?),v-viipp+9-222pp [paginated] includes separate contents+illustrations lists/tables,XIX (19) chapters,4 b/w monochrome illustrations includes frntis, interspersed throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half-title,b/w frntis,title page and to rear,2pp publisher's advert for complete ACE SERIES list of titles (71 titles).Author's 6th and latest (at that date) title with this publisher.
