The Countess Cathleen, was acted in 1899 in Dublin and caused an uproar, citing blasphemy because of the language of the demons and the character Shemus Rua used, agitated by Catholic students' petition, clergy, politicians and newspapers. After the performance,Yeats added a love scene and in that form it was revived in New York,a complete revision followed, making it suitable for performance at the Abbey Theatre,Dublin.
