Zumwinkle, Richard : Taylor and Taylor, Printers

University of California?, Los Angeles, CA?

Original essay printed on beige paper. No date, circa 1960. 6 1/4" x 9 1/2." Four pages (one leaf folded in half), complete. A brief history of Taylor & Taylor, a notable San Francisco printing house founded by brothers Edward DeWitt Taylor and Henry H. Taylor at the turn of the century. In addition to the firm's history, the author also discusses Taylor & Taylor's relation to other members and institutions of the printing and book industry including John Henry Nash and the Book Club of California, the work they have produced, and exhibitions featuring their work. A note near the end of the essay says Frederic W. Goudy designed Taylor & Taylor's emblem. Excerpt from the essay: "Taylor & Taylor undertakes the designing and printing of books, and only rarely serves as a publisher. Fine works have been produced for such organizations as the Society of California Pioneers, the Book Club of California, the Bohemian Club, the Sierra Club, and the San Francisco Art Association, as well as for private individuals, trade publishers, museums, colleges, and associations. Perhaps less known to bibliophiles are the examples of commercial printing--business histories, annual reports, house magazines, and advertising brochures--which have earned for Taylor & Taylor the high respect of California corporations.".
