(POE, Edgar Allen). THE UNITED STATES MAGAZINE, and DEMOCRATIC REVIEW. Washington, D.C.: Langtree and O'Sullivan, (1837- June 1852, vol.1-30 bound in 29 vols as vol 4 is the single month of December 1838 and bound at the end of Vol. 3). This is an uninterrupted run of the Democratic Review. This literary and political journal was founded in Washington. In l841 it moved to New York and the following year absorbed Brownson's Boston Quarterly Review, becoming further devoted to politics. In 1846 it merged with the United States Review and thereafter declined. Among its contributors, particularly in these early issues are Whittier, Hawthorne, Poe, and Whitman. There were seven contributions by Poe from 1844-1848, four were "Marginalia," the others were: "Amelia Welby," "The Power of Words," and "The Literati of New York- S. Anna Lewis." All the Poe contributions are present as are very early Walt Whitman items, which are signed Walter Whitman and written long before Leaves of Grass. The volumes are bound in buckram with leather labels. this is an ex-library copy with all the usual markings, Volumes 23,24,& 30 need rebinding. Overall a very good, serviceable set of an extremely important and scarce American periodical., Very Good
