Smith writes his account under the pseudonym, "A. L. O. C." This is a retelling of an apparent attempt on Smith's life when he served as President of the Brome County Branch of the Dominion Alliance in Brome County, Quebec, Canada. Smith was brutally beaten at a train station while sleeping which he believed was backlash from the "liquor party." The Dominion Alliance was a temperance group, so Smith's position as president resulted in him being targeted by liquor seller and people who were against Prohibition. The assailants are eventually captured, tried, and convicted, but the outcome is described as "unsatisfactory" as said assailants received softer punishment than expected.. Book.
