This is one of the first books written in the genre of historical fiction: Abbé Barthelemy published this story in 1788 as a retelling of the historical account of Anacharsis, a Scythian who became famous in Greece for his philosophical ideas. This story told the invented tale of Anacharsis’ son who travels to Greece and learns about the influence of his father. The book itself revitalized European interest in Greece and inspired the continent’s sympathy for Greek independence in the 19th century.
