Red Hook Editions, New York City, NY, 2014

ISBN 0984195424

First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 276 pages. Rare Peter Van Agtmael collectible set. A pristine copy of "Disco Night Sept 11" with a pristine copy of original color print, both signed by Peter Van Agtmael. The photographer's landmark second collection. One of the most important photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Peter van Agtmael and Yolanda Cuomo: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted in front and pale gray titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs by Peter van Agtmael. He has also patiently transcribed the text from actual interviews and conversations, and they accompany each photograph. Original 6 X 6 inch color print of "Raymond Hubbard" enclosed in its own protective plastic sheet: Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Peter van Agtmael's "Disco Night Sept 11". His ironically titled masterwork. The casualty of 9/11, the Disco Night event was obviously cancelled, the parking lot deserted. But its billboard announcement was still standing, brightly lit, for van Agtmael's camera to capture for posterity. "A chronicle of America's wars from 2006-2013. The photographs shift back and forth from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the USA, unsparingly capturing the violent, ceaseless cost, but also the mystery and the madness, the beauty and absurdity at the core of each conflict" (Publisher's blurb). "Raymond Hubbard", one of the most iconic images of the book, shows the eponymous veteran/father (whose missing leg has been replaced with a prosthetic) gamely playing "Star Wars" with his kids. Van Agtmael may or may not be aware of it, but his photograph is a perfect example of Roland Barthes' "punctum": That is, what differentiates a great photograph from an ordinary one is the "wound" that in this case, is literally one. An absolute "must-have" title for Peter van Agtmael collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Peter van Agtmael. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a 6 X 6 inch original color print of "Raymond Hubbard", also very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on verso by the photographer. One of the most iconically beautiful images of the book, it shows the eponymous young veteran/father (whose missing leg has been replaced with a prosthetic) gamely playing "Star Wars" with his kids. This title is a great photography book. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy (with signed original print) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare signed set thus. 188 plates, 19 gatefolds, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO PETER VAN AGTMAEL'S "2ND TOUR HOPE I DON'T DIE", "COLLATERAL DAMAGE: THE HUMAN FACE OF WAR", AND RYAN SPENCER REED TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0984195424.
