Tinted coloured illustration to title page of circus elephant delivering the post. 14 tinted plates, many others in b/w plus illustrations to endpapers. Pages foxed to outer edges, slight signs of wear and use otherwise a remarkably clean and sound copy. Illustrations include some extraordinary examples of postal systems around the world. Catapault plane launched from ships to arrive at shore before the liner.Skating, skiing, cycling, horse-riding, rowing, flying postmen, automatic pick-ups by train, rope pick-ups from small planes, airships, post offices in caves... plus there was a time in the UK when telephone boxes doubled up as post boxes and dispensed stamps.
