Antonioni, Michelangelo (Translated by William Arrowsmith) : That Bowling Alley On The Tiber: Tales Of A Director

Oxford University Press, New York City, NY, 1985

ISBN 019503676X

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 208 pages. Rare Michelangelo Antonioni collectible set. A fine copy "That Bowling Alley On The Tiber", with a rare vintage publicity photograph, signed by Michelangelo Antonioni. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Michelangelo Antonioni's "Quel bowling sul Tevere" in a felicitous English translation. His first and only collection of stories and ideas for future films. "In this evocative book, Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the world's greatest directors, gives us a rare glimpse inside the creative mind. He has written thirty-three richly suggestive pieces elaborating ideas for films as yet unproduced. Reveals a master of cinema in a new role, that of an accomplished and sensitive writer" (Publisher's blurb). "These writings, like his films, pair luminous landscapes with ethereal tales. These are clearly working notes, and they are as interesting for their analysis of the director's methods as for their literary content" (Library Journal). Some of the stories were eventually realized as the film director's last full-length film, "Beyond The Clouds", which the ailing Antonioni directed with the indispensable assistance of Wim Wenders, the great German film director. An absolute "must-have" title for Michelangelo Antonioni collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. It comes with a 5 X 7 inch vintage publicity photograph, indicated/stamped as such on verso ("Propriedad de Regino Boti Nov 17 1960 Servicio Fotografico") that is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen in front by Michelangelo Antonioni. It is one of his most beautiful specimen-signatures we have ever seen: Bold, assured, elegant. Made for and distributed on a restricted basis to members of the press (for reproduction in magazines, newspapers, and other printed media), the vintage print remains in excellent condition, is encased in a protective plastic sleeve, and is eminently suitable for framing. As far as we know, this is the only such set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. Please note: Antonioni signed the print, NOT the book. His signature is vintage, not his much later one, which deteriorated badly in his old age and after his stroke. A rare set thus. The greatest Italian film director of the 20th century. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 019503676X.
