Autograph letters : South African involvement in the First World War

--

Three autograph letters, in a mixture of Dutch and Afrikaans, from Paul and Stefina Bronkhorst (?) of 'Tweefontein' farm, Mooi River district, Natal, to 'Pa en Ma' of 'Vergelegen' farm, Polela district, Natal, 1915. Describing farming conditions and expressing regret that they are unable to lend Pa any money. These letters are interesting for Afrikaner attitudes towards South African involvement in the Great War. The writer is critical of the 'Botha Governement.' The issue of South African involvement in German South-West Africa appears to have divided the Bronkhorst family. Trooper M.M. Bronkhorst (a brother) had gone to the front; while the letter-writers felt that Botha had no business invading DSWA. Fourteen pages quarto and small octavo, with two related newspaper clippings. folded, with slight foxing.
