Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) was an American historian and ethnologist who specialized in the histories of western states, such as California, Texas, and Alaska, Mexico and other regions of Central America, British Columbia, and Canada. He founded the famous Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley in 1905. Today, the Bancroft Library remains a significant research center and public library specializing in books on western North America..
